Chapter 1 of The Great Gatsby should be complete.  So should all the study questions for Chapter 1 and the Quickwrites.  Quick writes will be posted after we have officially finished reading chapter 1.  Be sure to stay on top of these questions as I can ask for them at any time after reading the chapter and giving you time in class to finish the answers.  The same with the quick writes.  If you need to check out at book because you are falling behind, let me know. You are allowed to check out books through me.

Research Question

Juniors:  "The Last Meow" unit has come to a close.  Period 3, your class will be taking the timed writing on Thursday, all other classes finished on Monday.  If you have fallen behind on anything, please see me or view the below assignments and get the info you need.  If you were absent for our PressPass Activity, you will need to interview two people and do a report on one of the people you interviewed for a grade.  We are beginning The Great Gatsby unit next.  There will be a lot of work in this unit so be sure to keep up in class and check this website periodically to be sure you have all assignment turned in.

We finished our Logos/Ethos/Pathos questions.  We also began our PressPass Activity.  We will be doing interviews on Wednesday and reporting to the class on Thursday.

Parts 5-8 are due tomorrow for "The Last Meow."

We completed parts 2 through 4 for our article "The Last Meow."  Be sure to save everything as you will be turning in all annotations and notes for this unit.

We began the paraphrasing section of this unit.  We only paraphrased paragraph 9 based on the directions given (The Last Meow 2).

Today in class, we finished chunking the article and discussed how the idea of the decision changed in our quick write writing prompt.  Be sure to save all documents, they will be turned in at the end for a Close Read grade.

We finished learning to analyze and interpret poetry.  Students are now analyzing and interpreting the remaining 5 poems from Emily Dickinson in our anthology.  Each of the 5 poems must have a close read analysis:

1. Analyze the title 

2. Read through the poem and write down your first thoughts about the poem

3. Analyze the poem stanza by stanza or line by line

4. Create topics that could be interpreted (at least 3 topics per poem)

5. Write a thesis statement for each poem

 

After this, write two to three interpretative paragraphs on only ONE of the five poems you read.  DO NOT DO INTERPRETATIVE PARAGRAPHS FOR ALL FIVE!!

These poems were analyzed together as a class and do not need to be done again.

Today in class we wrote our interpretative essay for one of the Emily Dickinson poems that we analyzed.  All items are due today:  5 poem analysis and 1 small interpretative essay.

We continued to write our interpretation of "The Fall of the House of Usher."  The directions are included in the presentation.  The direction slide is near the end of the presentation.

In class today we read the poem "Because I could not stop for Death" by Emily Dickinson.  We are analyzing and interpreting poems to prepare ourselves for a small essay on a poem of our choice.

We are watching the movie Freedom Writers in class for the next three days in preparation of going to Southwest Auditorium on Thursday to hear Manny Scott tell us about his life.  Mr. Scott was a student in the classroom portrayed in the movie.

Today we finished the symbol handout and received direction for our final assignment for "The Fall of the House of Usher."  You are to write an essay, then get into a group who share your same opinion and create a poster.  The last three slides of the powerpoint are your directions.

In class today we finished writing a description or story.  We took the words we created from reading "The Fall of the House of Usher" as mood, and created a story using those words as tone.  The length of the story should be one page, front and back.

You are proving to me that you can follow the structure of a problem/solution essay, similar to Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence.

Your satire children's booklet is due on Thursday at the beginning of class on December 4, 2014.  You will have Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to work on your booklet in class.  If your group needs additional time, you will have to assign group members tasks for homework.

We are working on "The Devil and Tom Walker" satire unit.  We read the short story "The Devil and Tom Walker", watched an episode of Futurama, and started our children's book on satire.  (Period 3 is a bit behind the other classes.)  The presentation and handouts are attached.  If you have a Netflix account, you can view the cartoon from the presentation.  It is not available on YouTube.

Crucible Character Analysis Essay

Rough drafts must be complete for tomorrow.  We will be revising and editing our papers in class.  After handwriting our revisions, we will correct the revisions using the computer.  Final drafts are due Monday.

In class we revised our essays.  Essays are due on Monday 11/17.  We will NOT be typing in the lab on Monday.  We will only be printing our essays in class.

Your outline will be due on Wednesday.  We will begin typing on Wednesday.  Remember, no outline, no typing.  Be sure to be prepared with your outline.

We continued working on the Crucible unit test in class.  No homework.

Today in class we went over information that will be on your Crucible unit test beginning tomorrow.  Your introduction paragraph outline needs to be complete by tomorrow.

In class we took a quiz on the Crucible Acts 2 and 3.  After the quiz, we worked on any incomplete or missing assignment that may not be finished as of today.  Reminder:  all missing/incomplete work is due the last day of the Crucible unit (approximately 2 weeks away).
